What can I expect?
Tom Stoppard’s Arcadia returns to London in a powerful new staging from visionary director Carrie Cracknell.
Celebrated as one of the greatest plays of the last century, Arcadia is a mesmerising fusion of intellect, emotion and irresistible theatrical energy. Now playing for a strictly limited season at The Old Vic, this is a rare chance to experience a modern classic as you’ve never seen it before.
Set within the walls of a grand English country house, the play travels effortlessly between two eras. In the early 19th century, we meet Thomasina, a brilliantly gifted young mathematician whose discoveries seem to reach far beyond her time. Around her, adults wrestle with desire, ambition and the delicate balance between order and chaos.
In the present day, the same house becomes a battleground of ideas as modern scholars attempt to untangle the mysteries left behind. Their search for truth leads to unexpected revelations—both historical and deeply personal—blurring the boundaries between knowledge and passion.
Stoppard’s writing crackles with wit, romance and breathtaking intelligence. Winner of major accolades including the Olivier Award, Drama Desk Award and Tony Award for Best Play, Arcadia has captivated audiences around the world for more than 30 years. This new production honours the play’s brilliance while bringing fresh clarity, contemporary energy and emotional depth.
Whether you’re drawn by its scientific intrigue, its sweeping love stories or its beautifully crafted humour, Arcadia promises an evening of theatre that lingers long after the final curtain.
